On the Violent Suppression of Protests in Iran
Dear Secretary-General,
According to Amnesty International, at least 161 persons have been killed during the violent suppression of the November 2019 protests in Iran. The speaker of the National Security Committee of the Iranian Parliament confirmed that approximately 7000 persons have been arrested because of participating in the protests.
We urgently appeal to you to undertake the following measures:
– Please request from the Iranian authorities that the responsibility for shooting protesters be subjet of independent investigations, prefereably by an international entity.
– Please request from the Iranian authorities the release of the prisoners who have been detained during the protests.
Hundreds of families in Iran who have lost their beloved members are watching how the international commnity reacts to the incredible killing of peaceful protesters. Thousands of persons are kept in prisons and subject to pressure by the authorities with the aim that they admit crimes they have never committed.
Your immediate action is needed in this matter.
Respectfully,
